On 14th July 2008, I took our female stray cat for spaying to help retain her within the community and give her a long and healthy life without any female ailment complications.  At the local vet, I left her for them to prep her for sterilisation.  As usual, I picked her up at 4.30pm after she woke up from the anaesthesia.  I collected her and took her home. She was unusually freaked out when I let her out to be with her friends and family.  This puzzled me as I have spayed a number of cats and they did not react this way.

The next day, I received a call from the local vet telling me that the cat I brought in was pregnant with 3 to 4 foetuses and there was a charge for the drip that she had to be put on following the surgery!!  As I am a 'Pro Life' advocate, I could not reconcile the fact that the vet without so much as checking to ensure non-pregnancy, just went ahead with the abortion without so much as a phone call to inform me of her condition! I was livid!  If there was no payment required for the drip, would they have contacted me to tell me this?  I don't think so.  It was only then that I understood why she was so freaked out, the sudden drop in estrogen, coupled with the emptiness in her belly, would send any human woman into a downward spiral.

This incident has showed me that the 'homeless' does not get the same level of prep as a paying patient.  Fortunately, the cat has since forgiven me for this.  What a monetary motivated society we live in!!

This will be my first update on livejournal since I do have some free time.

In light of the recent incident where a resident in Tampines had the misconception that stray cats bring diseases that can cross-infect humans and requested the authorities get rid of the.  Firstly, I would like to allay any fears that anyone may have on this.  The term 'stray cats' just means that these cats have no forever home.  Either their irresponsible owners decided that they are too much of a bother, or they have outgrown their cuteness; and just dumps them somewhere to fend for themselves.  These cats do get exposed to the elements and they do get sick, just like humans.  However, I have checked and verified with a couple of vets in Singapore and the US and there can be no cross-infection to dogs or humans; as they are different in their genetic composition.

I love watching these stray cats in our estate playing together and eating together.  They have different personalities and some can be quite the character!  I have had the pleasure of getting to know some of these strays and their eyes speak volumes....the gratitude, the appreciation and love for the simple food that we provide them and water and they are happy!  I have learnt so much from these cats about the simplicity of life.  They define the term 'Don't Sweat the Small Stuff' completely!!

With the joys that these cats bring, there is also an attachment to them which will inevitably come with sadness when we lose them.  Believe me, we have lost quite a few, because of the intolerance of people with animals.  With this, I would like to introduce you to some of these cats:

Oreo - 7 years old in June 2008

Oreo, or Beanz as she is affectionately called, has the elegance comparable to that of Duchess from the Disney movie, 'The Aristocats'.  She cleans herself consistently and never fails to have her fur perfectly 'coiffured'.  Even with all the elegance and poise of a pedigree, Oreo is one HELL of a mouser!!  She wins hands down and none of her kids or grandkids could ever compare to her ability to chase a mouse out of the hole.

Mommy Cat or Squee - missing since 2007

Shadowie & Faddie - Mommy Cat's daughters

Now, we remember the ones we lost....we miss them dearly.

Star - taken and possibly euthanised because of a fractured back.

Speck - Sterilised him and lost him to Pest Control

Arctic - Victim of a hit and run from the slip road of the ECP!
This beautiful girl was like a sister to my dog and she used to walk along with my dog on his walk!  They were rather close and she would play with him and he would lick her affectionately.  So, when her carcass was found by the side of the ECP, Blazer, my dog, whimpered because he knew she could no longer walk with him.  However, in spirit, we know she still walks with us.
